Minimum Green Building Requirements

BACKGROUND Waterfront Toronto is committed to making the city’s waterfront both a national and global model for sustainability. What we do on the waterfront can and will set new standards for best practices not only in Canada but throughout the world. To meet corporate policy objectives and achieve the goals set out in Waterfront Toronto’s Sustainability Framework (2005), the Mandatory Green Building Requirements (MGBR) were originally developed in 2006 and updated in August 2012. Waterfront Toronto recognized that more detailed revisions for improved performance were required.

The Green Building Handbook

INTRODUCTION Non-profits, Fortune 500 companies, and cities across the country are enjoying the environmental, health, and economic benefits of green building. Here in New York City, green buildings are an increasingly common element of the City’s skyline, making a lasting impact on the City’s future. Local Law 86, known as the “Green Building Law,” passed in 2005, requires the use of green building standards in the construction and renovation of certain City-owned and Cityfunded buildings. Green buildings are also a key component of the recently released PlaNYC: A Greener Greater New York (PlaNYC), the City’s long-term, sustainability plan. The momentum behind green building is growing and now is the time for those considering capital projects to understand the opportunities and challenges associated with green construction.

Better Forests, Better Cities

Cities across the world are reeling from the direct impacts of deforestation and forest degradation. In neighborhoods with low tree cover, higher mortality rates from extreme heat are on the rise, disproportionately affecting poor and marginalized communities. Meanwhile, deforestation and other disturbances to the world’s forests emit an average of 8.1 billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, contributing to devastating climate impacts in cities across the world.
