The realization of the need for codes did not become apparent until the invention of the steam engine. The first commercially successful steam engine was patented by Thomas Savery of England in 1698. The Savery engine, and the numerous improved engines which followed, marked the beginning of the industrial revolution. This new economical source of power was used to drive machines in factories and even enabled new and faster forms of transportation to be developed.
