Deep water gravity–capillary waves are relevant in a range of applications, including
the understanding of the generation of waves by wind and the interpretation of satellite
remote sensing data (see for example Zhang 1995 and Wright 1978). They have also
been used to test the predictions of weak turbulence theory (Falcon, Laroche & Fauve
2007). The study of solitary waves in this regime is of particular theoretical interest
since it is only under the joint effects of surface tension and gravity that localized
water waves in three dimensions have been found in the water wave problem.
