Heating requirements account for over 50% of total end energy needs in Germany. This means that significantly more kilowatt hours are needed for space heating, hot water production and process heat than for electricity and mobility together. A full energy system transformation with the goal of reducing CO2 emissions by at least 80% in the year 2050 relative to 1990 levels can therefore only succeed if there is a clear switch to renewable energy sources in the heating sector as well, and additionally, if all savings potentials are fully taken advantage of.
