Seals prevent, or reduce to a minimum acceptable level, leaks of gas or liquid from between component surfaces. They also prevent dirt from entering through those surfaces. Static seals stop leaks between components that do not move relative to each other. A typical use is to seal flange joints. The most common static seals are gaskets and orings. These are described in the Gaskets module of this course.

Job Training Mechanical Technician Course Module 8 (Pumps)
The main purpose of a pump is to move liquid from one place to another. Liquids can fall from a higher level to a lower level by gravity, without the need of a pump. However, a pump is needed to move liquid from a lower to a higher level, or to move it horizontally. Pumps increase the pressure of the liquid. They take liquid at low pressure into the suction (inlet) side and give that liquid out at higher pressure from the discharge (outlet) side.
